Details: Mertz states that maintaining peace in Europe is one of the key principles of his government, and speaks of the need to end the war in Ukraine, but not on terms that would mean “surrender.”

He also emphasized the need to maintain unity between European countries and the United States, since “without the consent of Ukraine and without the consent of the Europeans, there will be no basis for real, lasting peace in Ukraine.”
The chancellor welcomed US President Donald Trump’s attempts to end the war, but stressed that “European affairs can only be resolved with the consent of Europe,” because Europe “is not a pawn, but a sovereign player with its own interests and values.”
Mertz reiterates that Russia could end the war in a matter of minutes if it really wanted to.
He says Germany will continue to support Ukraine “as long as possible” and says he supports the idea of using frozen Russian assets “available for this purpose”.
“Putin must realize that he has no chance of winning this war at the expense of the European order of freedom and peace,” Mertz emphasized.
The chancellor says that Germany will increase its support to Ukraine next year to a total of 11.5 billion euros.
As you know, the USA and Ukraine at the negotiations in Geneva over the weekend adjusted the initial proposal of the Trump team with 28 points and developed a new document with 19 points; the most politically sensitive issues were left to the discretion of the presidents of both countries.
The day before, Merts had a phone conversation with President Volodymyr Zelenskyi regarding the updated plan.
