Direct speech: “Now the ball is on the Russian table, whether it will be possible to reach it by Christmas, I don’t know if they will use the time.
We will do everything to appeal further to the Russians, to the Russian government, so that, at least for Christmas, hostilities cease. Because during the last weeks and months, the war basically destroys the civilian population, kindergartens, schools, it is the terror of the civilian population in Ukraine.
And maybe the Russian government has remnants of humanity and can leave people alone for a few days, at least during Christmas.”
Details: Mertz suggested that if such a truce takes place, it may be the beginning of constructive, sober negotiations that will lead to lasting peace in Ukraine.
Prehistory:
- Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said in December 2024 that he proposed to Ukraine to establish a ceasefire and a large-scale exchange of prisoners of war for Christmas, but President Volodymyr Zelensky allegedly rejected this idea.
- The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Hungary, Peter Szijarto, said that Kyiv refused the telephone conversation between Orban and Zelensky regarding the Hungarian proposal for a “truce”, and was also indignant that almost no one in the EU supported the “Christmas truce”.
- During his speech at the so-called “Results of the Year”, Russian Governor Vladimir Putin confirmed that Orbán offered him to establish a “Christmas truce” for several days and exchange prisoners. In response, the Kremlin leader said that “we need to think.”
