Details: When asked by journalists about possible security guarantees offered by the US during negotiations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi in Berlin, Mertz replied that the guarantors would have to repel Russian forces in case of violation of any terms of the truce.

“We will ensure a demilitarized zone between the warring parties and, to be very specific, we will also act against corresponding Russian incursions and attacks. We are not there yet,” the German chancellor said.
“The fact that the Americans have undertaken such a commitment – to protect Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire, as if it were NATO territory – I believe that this is a new position of the United States of America that deserves attention,” he added.
It will be recalled that at the meeting of European leaders in Berlin on Monday, it was proposed to form defense forces to ensure a possible ceasefire in Ukraine.
The joint statement says that the European-led forces, with the support of the US, will support the armed forces of Ukraine and ensure the security of airspace and maritime territories.
The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, previously noted that there is “serious forward movement” in the discussions on security guarantees for Ukraine.
