Details: The transatlantic partnership is even more necessary today than before, Merkel said shortly before Donald Trump was sworn in as US president.

With Russia’s attack on Ukraine, the main principle of the European post-war order – territorial integrity – has become ineffective, she said, speaking at a reception for the Christian Democratic Union in Düsseldorf.

Only with the United States and within the framework of NATO can it be achieved that “Putin does not win the war and that Ukraine remains an independent state,” Merkel said.

Merkel called Trump a “special president”. He defends the “legitimate interests” of the USA, but he does not believe in “win-win situations” in multilateral cooperation, but believes that there is always a winner and a loser.

“We will not change Donald Trump, but we can react to him,” Merkel said, adding that the US would also be unwise not to seek allies in Europe. “We are also a strong factor,” she said.

What happened before:

  • Friedrich Merz, candidate for the post of German chancellor from the opposition bloc CDU/CSU, sees Donald Trump’s presidency as an opportunity for Europe.
  • The newly elected US President Donald Trump previously confirmed that he considers it necessary for NATO members, including European ones, to spend 5% of GDP on defense. Germany during Merkel’s chancellorship did not fulfill the requirement to spend 2% on defense, for which Trump mercilessly criticized her.
