Direct Language: “The spread to Ukraine of the same protection that NATO countries have certainly more effective, though it would be something different from NATO membership. I think it would be a stable, long -lasting, effective security guarantee, much better than some of the proposals I see.”
Details: Answering the question of what the difference between Meloni’s proposal and the provision of full -fledged NATO membership, the Italian Government Prescribe that this step guarantees that the Mutual Defense Regulations would be applied “also to protect Ukraine … even in the territory outside NATO, regardless of Kyiv’s membership.”

Prehistory:
- At the end of February, Italy Prime Minister George Meloni said that the most effective security guarantees for Ukraine are NATO membership.
- On February 26, US President Donald Trump stated that, within the future agreement on the “termination of the war” in Ukraine, he excludes the possibility of its membership in NATO. He also said that the reason for the full -scale invasion of Russia into Ukraine was allegedly the Alliance, namely, the promise that Ukraine will once become its member.
- Earlier, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegset also excluded Ukraine’s membership in NATO as part of the “peaceful settlement” of the war.
- Ukraine, meanwhile, continues to insist that it does not change the position on membership in the North Atlantic Alliance.
