Details: Reuters sources said on Monday evening that the Lebanese army was withdrawing from several positions on the southern border with Israel.
The media reports that Lebanese troops have retreated at least five kilometers north of the border.
The retreat continues amid reports of an imminent Israeli ground invasion of southern Lebanon.
The Lebanese mass media also reported on massive artillery shelling by the Israelis on the border village of Wazzani.
What preceded:
- On September 30, the American edition of The Wall Street Journal reported that Israeli special forces are conducting raids in southern Lebanon, gathering intelligence and preparing for a possible ground invasion that could begin as early as this week, despite international pressure to prevent an escalation.
- The media reported that Israel informed the US of preparations for a limited ground operation in Lebanon aimed at eliminating the infrastructure of Hezbollah militants along the border.
Prehistory:
- It will be recalled that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict escalated on October 7, when Hamas attacked Israel with rockets.
- On the same day, militants broke through the border and attacked the Supernova electronic music festival, killing some of the participants and taking them hostage.
- On October 9, Israel announced that it had returned to control all areas on the border near the Gaza Strip.
