On January 6, the Pechersk District Court of Kyiv extended the detention until January 31 without the right to bail for Serhiy Hnezdilov, a soldier of the 56th Military Police Brigade, who publicly voluntarily left his unit, reports “Suspilne” and “Hromadske”.

Prosecutor Mykola Shelest asked the court to extend Gniezdilov’s pretrial detention until March 15. He believes that a serviceman can hide from the investigation and the court.

Hnezdilova’s lawyer Anastasiya Burkovska asked the court to soften the preventive measure, replacing detention with house arrest.

Hnezdilov, in a comment to Suspilnyi, said that he reminded the judge of his consent to return to the military unit, in which, according to him, they had consented to his return to service.

“We first received consent to return. Now for some reason we have been refused a refund. It seems that they are trying to drag out the trial as much as possible and show: gentlemen, this will happen to all of you,” he said.

The first court hearing in the Gnezdilov case will take place on January 10 in Dnipro.

On September 1, Serhiy Hniezdilov, who joined the ranks of the Armed Forces in 2019, voluntarily left the military unit and announced this publicly in order, according to him, to draw attention to the need for rotations for the infantry, as well as to the lack of clear terms for service.

The 56th Military Police Brigade reacted to Gnezdilov’s actions, ordered an official investigation there and declared that the soldier “committed actions that contain signs of a criminal offense.”

Opinions in society about the SZCH of Gnezdilov were divided: some criticized the voluntary dismissal from the unit, while others, on the contrary, supported it.

Hnezdilov also wrote on his Facebook about at least 80,000 cases of SZH. RFE/RL has sent a request to the Ministry of Defense for this information, but has not yet received a response.

Hnezdilov pointed out that “SZCH is a criminal offense”, however, he called for solving problems, and not being silent about them.

On September 24, the prosecutor’s office announced the opening of criminal proceedings against Hnezdilov.
