In order to satisfy the interests of US President Donald Trump, NATO is considering the possibility of holding a special joint mission in Greenland.

Details: The US president reiterated this week that he wants Greenland. Military intervention is not excluded. The Prime Minister of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen, then announced the end of the Alliance if the US actually began military action against her country.

NATO sources do not expect this to happen anytime soon. Officially, the alliance remains silent, but behind the scenes they are said to be working hard to resolve the issue.

On Thursday morning, 32 ambassadors of the alliance gathered for a weekly meeting. It was held in a “calm atmosphere”. Denmark raised the issue of Greenland in a “positive and forward-looking intervention”, NOS insiders said. US Ambassador to NATO Whitaker also reportedly struck a conciliatory tone.

As it became clear during the meeting, almost all countries want the Alliance to play a greater role in the Arctic. Several members have proposed a new NATO mission in the region. This would significantly strengthen the defense of the Arctic. And, above all, it would be a joint effort, including the United States, the most important ally, which would at least temporarily ease the worst tensions.

To launch such a mission, the consent of all 32 members of the alliance is required. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte must first find out whether Trump supports a joint NATO mission, which may be called “Arctic Sentinel.” Two similar missions have already been launched in recent years: “Baltic Sentinel” in the Baltic Sea and “Eastern Sentinel” on NATO’s eastern border.

Diplomats believe that if Trump agrees, Arctic Sentinel could be up and running within weeks, which they hope will help restore at least some confidence in the alliance.

The EU’s top diplomat, Kaia Callas, said the European Union is discussing how to respond if US President Donald Trump’s threats against Greenland turn out to be real.

We will remind, the spokeswoman of the White House, Caroline Levitt, said that the US president and his advisers are discussing a number of options for the acquisition of Greenland and that “the involvement of the American Armed Forces is always one of the options.”
