Details: Eyewitnesses note that the shooting continued for several minutes near the presidential palace. The source of the shots remains unknown.
According to AFP, armed individuals attacked the interior of the presidential residence. At the same time, Al Arabiya reports on convoys of military vehicles moving towards the palace.
“I’m stuck in the Place de Nation in front of the presidential residence because I hear intense gunfire and see military vehicles coming from all directions,” said one local resident.
“The situation is completely under control, there is no fear,” said Foreign Minister Abderaman Kulamalla, surrounded by soldiers, during a live broadcast on Facebook, which was filmed at the presidential palace.
“We are here to protect our president,” Kulamalla added.
This event took place a week after the parliamentary elections, which were supposed to be an important step towards the restoration of democracy. However, the opposition boycotted them, and the election results have not yet been announced. Analysts suggest that their summary could strengthen the power of President Mahamat Debi Itno.
Mahamat Debi Itno came to power as a military ruler after the death of his father in 2021. His father ruled the country for more than three decades and died fighting the rebels. Last year, Itno won the presidential election, which international observers criticized for not meeting democratic standards.
