Benjamin Asher initially served in the Hungarian Armed Forces under contract.
According to the newspaper, in March 2023 he did not appear to the place of service, and therefore a criminal case was initiated against him. The publication states that the man told his commander that he was going to fight in Ukraine.
According to unconfirmed information from the Ukrainian source, Benjamin Asher served in the third assault team. He died in battle against the occupying troops of the Russian Federation shortly after his 21st birthday.
The publication reports that Hungarian diplomacy is currently working to bring back the body of the dead home. At the same time, the father of the dead volunteer living in Canada wants to bury his son in Kiev or Toronto.
Journalists contacted a man who said his son lived in Canada from 2019 to 2021, after which he returned to Hungary.
He confirmed that his son was serving in the Hungarian army under a contract before he went to Ukraine, but as far as he knows, he went to the Ukrainian Front in the spring of 2023, but earlier, and earlier his plans “did not tell anyone”.
The man also said that his son had an autistic spectrum disorder. According to his father, his son wanted to become a professional military, but, as he claims, the Hungarian armed forces denied him.
Recently, Hungary summoned the Ambassador of Ukraine, protesting due to the alleged death of its citizen in Transcarpathia by the employees of the Tax Code.
The Ukrainian side noted that the deceased was a citizen of Ukraine, and according to the forensic examination, the cause of his death was the thromboembolism of the pulmonary artery.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, in turn, stated that the attempts of Hungary to manipulatively use for political purposes certain cases of mobilization in Ukraine are harmful to Ukrainian-Hungarian relations.
