Details: This is the first piece of legislation related to Ukraine submitted to the new 119th US Congress.
The preamble of the draft resolution states that the atrocities committed by Russian troops in Ukraine, as well as the forced transfer of hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians, including children, to the Russian Federation and the occupied territories meet the criteria set forth in Article II of the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide .
The operative part of the document condemns the Russian Federation for committing acts of genocide, calls on the United States, in cooperation with NATO and EU allies, to take measures to support the Ukrainian government to prevent further acts of Russian genocide against the Ukrainian people and supports tribunals and international criminal investigations to bring Russian political leaders and servicemen to responsibility.
Direct speech Markarova: “Thank you to the congressmen for introducing this important resolution! All crimes of the Russian Federation must be reflected in American legislation to ensure the punishment of Russian criminals and prevent such terrible crimes in the future.”
