Life in Canada, a speech for the national team of Ukraine and an invitation from Vancouver: Interview with Levshin

The World Hockey Championship in the IA Division will be remembered not only by the best result of the Ukrainian national team in recent years, but also by the fact that young performers have received important roles in the team.

One of them was Alexander Levshin. The 18-year-old goalkeeper played two matches and made a significant application for the fact that the gates of the “blue and yellow” for many years will be under reliable care.

The Champion decided to find out why the player from childhood wanted to defend the gate, how his life was going in Canada, they discussed the call at the Vancouver Camp and, of course, a speech for the national team of Ukraine.

– From 2023 you have been in the structure of Toronto Petriot. What was the most difficult in the first months of adaptation: language, other style of game, competition or life outside of hockey?

– In fact, there was nothing overly or problematic. I love this team insanely and grateful to this organization. We have a wonderful coaching staff, excellent teammates and teammates. Probably the most uncomfortable was that it takes 2 hours to get to the arena for 2 hours. Total 4 hours a day went only on the road.

We also have early training, which started at 13:00, so it was sometimes difficult to find time for school and study. With regard to the hockey part, it was most difficult to get yourself back and start playing much deeper in the goal, as the little Polyana (a hockey platform in North America is smaller in size from the European one) and adult players of good level.

– In an interview, you confessed that he wanted to become a goalkeeper, and his parents even denied. Why did he choose this position even then and over the years there was no desire to try yourself in another position?

– In fact, I cannot clearly explain my choice, I just have the feeling that I have been doing all my life, from birth and I like it. And when you like what you do, there is no desire to change something – you just continue to do your favorite business and get pleasure.

– Hockey is a sport of real men. But maybe he was still doing some sport?

– Unfortunately, other sports just do not have enough free time. Although I really like to play chess, football, basketball.

– What is the biggest difference between a goalkeeper’s style in Europe and North America? Has your equipment changed after moving?

– As I said earlier, the most important change in my game after moving to Canada was the “right choice of position”. I can also add that there is no right to a stupid rebound or ricochet, so I am working on that too. I try to catch straight throws tightly, or take the corners.

– Games, training – it is important and takes a lot of time and effort. But still, as you spend your free time, tell you about your life. For example, where do you live now, the team provides housing or some family takes care, how is it when students go for exchange?

– I live separately, I rent a room in a basement (on top of the house underground). If there is time – I like to walk, walk. Also I often train small goalkeepers, I really like it. My coach always said that when you teach someone, you study yourself.

– There are several Ukrainians in the North America youth leagues. Do you keep in touch with someone?

– Yes, of course! We often see and communicate with Elijah Shibinsky (season-2024/25 Ilya spent the team Toronto Junior Canadiane in Ojhl – approx.).

– World Championships and matches for the national team. Well, let’s start with the results, but with a flight. You are quite young, as from the American time belt to return to the European. Did you manage to switch quickly?

– There were no problems with the change of time zone. Even 5 days before departure, I tried to rest in the afternoon and not sleep at night. He could afford it because our season was over.

It was difficult to train in the first workout after the flight. But the second workout has already come out as new.

– You and Bogdan Dyachenko held an excellent tournament. Was there a traveling before the match with the British? I understand, though 18 years old, but experience is already enough for you, but still matches for the national team, probably other excitement.

– There was no traveling, but of course, he worried. Here, of course, I am obliged to say a lot of thanks to my partners – Bohdan Dyachenko and Sergey Pisarenko. The guys helped me very much and supported me.

I also helped me strongly and add confidence to our friendly game against Poland, which became the first game for me in the national team.

– You have been invited to the Vancouver Development camp. Tell us how it happened and what is it at all?

Said Vancouver’s General Scout in Ontario (Toronto, the capital of this province, while Vancouver is the main city in the province of British Columbia – note), said that we want to include you in our development camp.

I chose between four camps – Vancouver, Toronto and a couple of teams from the United States. But since I have no American visa, my choice stopped at Vancouver.

– Last fall, it was announced that you would join the NCAA team. But much older players play there. That is, for the University of Clarkson you will act not earlier than the 2026/27 season?

– Yes, everything is right. I plan to play with Major Junior two more seasons and then go to NCAA. In order to play in the University League, you must be an experienced and rooted goalkeeper, with a clear understanding of the game.
