In November, residents of Ukraine will be able to observe one of the brightest shooting stars of the year – the Leonid meteor shower. This is reported by EarthSky, transmits UNN.

Details

According to information, the peak of its activity is expected from November 16 to 18, when the number of meteors will be maximum.

The Leonid shooting star is formed by the remnants of the Tempel-Tuttle comet, the particles of which, falling into the Earth’s atmosphere, create an unforgettable sight in the autumn sky. The name of the stream is related to the constellation Leo, from which, at first glance, meteors “fly out”.

Leonids are characterized by high speed – up to 71 km/s, and usually up to 15 meteors per hour can be seen. Once every 33 years, when a comet approaches Earth, the stream becomes extremely intense, sometimes turning into a “meteor storm.”

The last such phenomenon was observed in 2001, and it remains one of the most impressive events in the world of astronomy.
