Source: director of the Department of Environmental Protection and Adaptation to Climate Change of the KMDA Oleksandr Vozny at a press briefing, writes “Interfax-Ukraine”

straight language: “The reason for the deterioration of air quality in Kyiv is fires in Kyiv, Chernihiv and Sumy regions, mainly fires in peatlands, but also in forests.

Also, the air condition is affected by the actual absence of wind, which does not allow polluting substances to disperse quickly, while the radiation background in the capital is absolutely normal, and already now we are observing a decrease in the brightness of the index, starting from the northern part, by an average of about 20%.”

Details: Vozny noted that the situation in the southern and southeastern parts of Kyiv is more complicated – the air is still quite polluted. On average, pollution is 5 times higher than the norm for dust particles.

Vozny noted that the air quality in each specific district can be monitored in the “Kyiv digital” application.

What preceded:

  • The KMDA warned that since the morning of September 20, the air condition in Kyiv has worsened due to fires in the region’s ecosystem. A strong smell of burning can be heard in the city. The authorities advise not to ventilate the premises and to limit prolonged exposure to the street.
  • Specialists of the State Enterprise “Forests of Ukraine” predicted an improvement in the air condition in Kyiv in a few hours.
  • The Ministry of Environment explained that the deterioration of air quality in autumn is connected with natural factors – temperature drops and increased humidity, as well as with fires in ecosystems.
