The jury in Miami acknowledged that Tesla carries 33% responsibility for a deadly crash with technology Autopilot In 2019 and obliged the company to pay the family of the dead and affected part of the compensation with the amount of $329 million, writes CNBC.

Payments consist of $129 million compensatory losses and $200 million penaltiesand Tesla has to cover about $42.5 million from compensation and the full amount of fines.

The case was considered after a deadly accident in Ki-Largo, Florida. The driver George McGie managed Tesla Model S with a feature on Enhanced Autopilotwhen he missed his phone and leaned to lift it. He believed that the autopilot slowed in the event of an obstacle. However, the car dispersed more than 100 km/h, traveled and crashed into a parked car and its owners. 22-year-old Nayebel Benavides died in place and her boyfriend Dyllon Angolo Surviving, but suffered serious injuries, including fractures and traumatic brain injury.

The lawyers of the plaintiffs emphasized that Tesla was predicting Autopilot for highways, but deliberately did not limit his use on other roads, but Ilon Musk He stated that the system controls better than a person. In their view, this created a dangerous illusion of safety.

Immediately after Tesla verdict gave a comment:

“Today’s decision is incorrect and threatens the development of automotive safety. No car in 2019 would be able to prevent this accident today. The driver was the only culprit – he was traveling at high speed and distracted on the phone.”

The verdict was a blow on the image of Tesla, because Ilon Musk tries to convince investors that the company can become a leader in the field of autonomous transport and launch Robots On the roads of the US. Company’s shares after a verdict declined to 1.8%and from the beginning of the year – on 25%which is the greatest fall among technological giants.

This process can become a precedent for future claims against Tesla related to Autopilot and Full Self-Driving. There are currently about a dozen similar cases in the United States, and the National Road Safety Directorate is continuing the Tesla autopilot’s safety.
