Journalists have confirmed the names of 153,000 Russian soldiers who died in the war against Ukraine

Since the beginning of the large-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, at least 153,000 Russian soldiers have died at the front, their identities were established by journalists from the Russian edition of “Mediazon” and the Russian service “BBC” together with volunteers based on open data.

According to the publication, from February 24, 2022 to December 4, 2025, at least 153,171 Russian servicemen were confirmed dead. Two weeks ago, there were almost four thousand fewer names on the list.

Researchers stress that the real number of casualties is probably higher.

On December 2, British intelligence analyzed data from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on Russian losses in the war. An office at the British Ministry of Defense indicated that Russia is likely to have lost 382,000 soldiers killed and wounded since the beginning of 2025, with total losses during a full-scale invasion reaching 1.168 million.

“Russia’s average daily losses during November 2025 reached 1,033, according to the General Staff of Ukraine – more than 1,008 in October 2024, the third increase in a month in a row,” the summary says.

Russia does not officially disclose its losses. Moscow last reported the number of people killed in September 2022, when 5,937 people died.
