It’s never too late: in Ireland 90-year-old woman graduated from university after a 70-year-old pause

In Ireland, a 90-year-old woman graduated from an open university and received a bachelor’s degree in English literature, which she started winning 70 years ago.

90-year-old Mariett McFarland from Londonoderri this year became the oldest among more than 300 graduates, according to BBC and Belfast Telegraph.

“I can barely believe it and it took me a lot of time,” She said.

Ms. McFarland began studying at the Faculty of English Literature in Trinity-College Dublin in the 1960s, but love came to her life. Having married at 21, the woman left her studies.

“I always thought I would like to study something else. And after the death of my husband, I had a little more time – because I looked after him – so I entered an open university,” Said the woman.

An open university offers flexible training – eye or partially correspondence, remote or mixed. The woman decided to learn online.

According to the graduate, the training was sometimes difficult, but she was helped by both the teacher and the family – four children, grandchildren and great -grandchildren.

The daughter -in -law explained Mariett how to print on the keyboard.

“I can’t use the computer at all, but I got a lot of help from the family.

I know they’re near if I need and help me in everything they can. But you know, it seems to me, they think that for a grandmother to have a degree is a little strange! “ – the woman shared.

The whole family came to Belfast to congratulate Mariett to receive a diploma. Seana Gale’s oldest daughter accompanied her mother at Waterfront Hall.

“I’m just extremely proud of her. She became a full -fledged bachelor’s student at the age of 90 – it is so exciting for her and for all of us.

She always regretted that she had not completed her studies at Trinity College in Dublin-we all knew it. But she had four children, a busy life and many things “”Seana said.

According to the woman, her mother completely plunged into her studies: they constantly sat on a sofa with a tablet, laptop and a bunch of books.

Meriete herself says that she has no career plans and probably does not use her diploma, but she still has several proposals for work.

“It’s pretty funny – I think it is automatically happening – but I get suggestions from employers. They seem to have not yet understood how old I’m – the graduate joked.

A woman wants to inspire everyone who wants to restore the abandoned study.

“If I was able to do it, anyone can. Never late”– says Mariett.

We will remind, last year the other 90-year-old woman graduated from the South University of New Hampshire.
