“Peace is on the horizon, there is no doubt that there have been events that give reason to hope that this war can end, and quite quickly, but it is still hope, far from 100% certainty,” Tusk said at the government meeting.
“When I say that peace is on the horizon, I mean the coming weeks, not months or years. By January, we all have to come together… to make a decision about the future of Ukraine, the future of this part of the world,” he added.
Tusk said that the security guarantees offered to Kyiv by the United States are a reason for hope that the conflict may end soon, but that Kyiv must compromise on territorial issues.
US President Donald Trump said after talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi on Sunday that they had come “close, maybe very close” to an agreement to end the war, although “difficult questions” remain.
Zelensky said that the issue of control over the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, which is in the hands of Russia, and the fate of Donbass still remain unresolved.
It should be noted that French President Emmanuel Macron says that it will be held in Paris at the beginning of January meeting of the “coalition of the determined” countries, where they plan to finalize the specific contributions of each state to the system of security guarantees for Ukraine.
On Tuesday, December 30, European leaders had another conversation regarding Ukraine and “peace talks”.
