Bloomberg interlocutors in Rome say that Italy allowed the aircraft from Matvienko to enter its airspace at the request of the Switzerland government. They added that the Italian government had consulted with the French authorities, which also received a flight request before granting permission.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Switzerland, at the request of Bloomberg, reminded that they could make exceptions from the ban on entry, “in particular for flights made for humanitarian, medical or diplomatic purposes.”

Prehistory:

  • The European Union forbade Russian aircraft to enter its airspace a few days after the start of a full -scale invasion of Russia into Ukraine in February 2022.
  • Matvienko led the Russian delegation at the World Conference of Speakers of Parliaments, which Geneva hosted.
  • Responding to this, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs George Tykhy said that Matvienko’s place was “on the dock, not at international conferences”, and her admission to Geneva “is shameful and did not have to happen.”
  • During the speech of Matvienko in Geneva, dozens of conference participants left the hall in protest.
