Poor coordination and a language barrier between the North Korean and Russian military forces in the Kursk region lead to serious problems on the battlefield. Friendly fire incidents and communication difficulties reduce the effectiveness of joint operations.
Source: ISW
Details: Inefficient communication makes it difficult to coordinate combat operations, which is especially noticeable in the conditions of intensive infantry attacks, in which North Korean units are involved. According to ISW, such problems are systemic and will continue in the near future, worsening the overall combat capability of the troops in the region.
Literally: “The language barrier significantly affects the effectiveness of interaction between North Korean and Russian forces, leading to errors such as friendly fire and disrupting the overall coordination of operations.”
Details: According to the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, North Korean troops mistakenly fired at Chechen special forces vehicles “Akhmat”, which led to the death of Russian servicemen.
Literally: “The GUR reported that a contingent consisting of Russian and North Korean servicemen in the Kursk region lost 200 people as of December 14 as a result of an attack by Ukrainian drones on the positions of North Korean troops.
Poor integration and ongoing communication problems between Russian and North Korean forces are likely to continue to cause friction in Russian military operations in the Kursk region in the near term.”
Key findings:
- Russian troops conducted a mechanized assault in the number of about a battalion in the Siversk direction, following recent reports of a change in command of Russian forces operating near Siversk.
- The recent assault on Siversk shows that Russian forces appear to be learning how to conduct more effective assaults, but are still far from regaining battlefield maneuverability.
- North Korean forces are reportedly facing heavy casualties and poor communications with Russian forces in the Kursk region, likely disrupting coordination between Russian and North Korean troops and undermining Russian military operations.
- Russia’s immediate plans for its military assets in Syria remain unclear as reports continue to emerge that Russia has reached an agreement to keep its main military bases in western Syria while withdrawing troops from its other bases in the country.
- Russian troops advanced near Siversk, Toretsk, Pokrovsk and Vugledar.
- Russian sources continue to complain about the insufficient training system of their military and incompetent military instructors.
