Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas have agreed on a preliminary draft of a cease-fire agreement in the Gaza Strip and the release of hostages, sources told CBS News on Tuesday, January 14th.
If all the details of the agreement are approved, and the Israeli government votes to approve the ceasefire, the implementation of the agreement could begin this week, the newspaper writes.
The deal could be the last major achievement of Joe Biden’s presidency, sources said. President-elect Donald Trump will oversee the implementation of the ceasefire after taking office.
The parties are expected to prepare public statements about the success of the deal, but hopes for a positive outcome remain high at all levels.
On January 13, Axios, citing Israeli officials, reported that Donald Trump’s chosen special representative for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, arrived in Israel to facilitate a deal on the release of hostages and a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip.
It was noted that Witkoff had arrived “as part of Trump’s last-minute effort to push all sides to reach an agreement by January 20.”
On January 9, the speaker of the National Security Council of the White House, John Kirby, said that the administration of Joe Biden is actively interacting with the new administration of Donald Trump to accelerate the conclusion of the agreement on the release of hostages in the Gaza Strip.
