Details: Iran’s parliament speaker Mohammad-Bagher Kalibaf warned that the US military and Israel would be “legitimate targets” if America strikes the Islamic Republic, as President Donald Trump has threatened.

Kalibaf issued the threat as lawmakers rushed to the rostrum in Iran’s parliament, shouting: “Death to America!”. Iranian state television broadcast the parliament session live.

Kalibaf, a hard-liner who has run for president in the past, thanked the police and Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard for “standing up” during the protests. He then directly threatened Israel, which he called the “occupied territory”, and the American military.

“In the event of an attack on Iran, both the occupied territory and all American military centers, bases and ships in the region will become our legitimate targets,” Kalibaf said.

“We do not believe that we should limit ourselves to an after-action response, and will act on the basis of any objective signs of a threat,” he said, hinting at a pre-emptive strike.

It remains unclear how serious Iran is about the strike, especially after its air defense systems were destroyed during the 12-day war with Israel in June.

In recent days, US President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to intervene and warned the Iranian leadership against using force against demonstrators. Trump said on Saturday that the United States is ready to help Iranians gain freedom.

According to the WSJ, US presidential administration officials have held preliminary discussions about possible military action against Iran over its bloody crackdown on protesters.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed the possible intervention of the United States in the situation in Iran in a telephone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
