Intense Fighting Continues in Eastern Ukraine as Forces Clash Over Key Territories

As of March 4, the Ukrainian General Staff reported 106 combat encounters along the front lines, highlighting ongoing intense military activity in the region.

The Russian military conducted a missile strike using three rockets and launched 52 airstrikes, deploying 122 guided bombs. Additionally, they utilized 6,031 kamikaze drones and executed 2,551 shelling operations targeting both populated areas and Ukrainian military positions.

Nearly half of the assaults were concentrated in three sectors: Pokrovsk, Kostiantynivka in Donetsk, and Huliaipole in Zaporizhzhia. In the Kostiantynivka sector, Russian forces attempted to breach defenses near the towns of Kostiantynivka, Pleshchiivka, Shcherbynivka, Illinivka, Rusyn Yar, and Sofiivka, conducting 14 attacks throughout the day.

In the Pokrovsk sector, Russian troops launched 15 assaults, attempting to advance in areas including Nikanorivka, Rodynske, Hryshyne, Udačne, Muravka, and Molodetske, with three ongoing attempts to improve their positions.

The Guliaipole sector also experienced 14 attacks, particularly around Huliaipole, Dobropillia, Zaliznychne, and Myrne, with two assaults still in progress.

Fighting persisted in various other regions, including the Northern Slobozhansky, Kursk, Southern Slobozhansky, Kupiansk, Lyman, Sloviansk, Kramatorsk, Oleksandrivka, and Dniprovsk directions.

According to an assessment by the U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War, Ukrainian forces reclaimed more territory than they lost for the first time since the summer counteroffensive of 2023 during the last two weeks of February.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported in a March 3 interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere Della Sera that Ukrainian troops had retaken 460 square kilometers of territory since the beginning of the year. He emphasized that Ukraine is not losing the war and is committed to dialogue, seeking peace.

Zelensky’s remarks likely pertain to advancements in the Oleksandrivka direction. Data from the DeepState project as of March 2 indicated that Ukrainian forces had pushed back Russian troops near Zlahoda, Novohryhorivka, Novomykolaivka, Stepove, and Ternove, located at the junction of Donetsk and Dnipropetrovsk regions.

On March 2, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine announced that Ukrainian military units had liberated nine populated areas in the Oleksandrivka sector, noting that airborne assault troops continue their active offensive operations.

The ongoing conflict in Eastern Ukraine has seen significant military engagements, with Ukrainian forces reportedly reclaiming territory amid intense attacks from Russian troops. Recent assessments indicate a shift in the balance of control, as both sides continue to engage in fierce combat across multiple fronts.
