As of March 3, the Ukrainian military reported 123 combat engagements along the front lines, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The conflict has seen a significant uptick in hostilities, with one missile strike, 46 airstrikes, and the deployment of 3,678 kamikaze drones, alongside 2,330 artillery shellings targeting populated areas and military positions.
Nearly half of the recorded clashes occurred in three key sectors: the Kostiantynivka and Pokrovsk directions in Donetsk, and the Hulyaipole direction in Zaporizhzhia. In the Kostiantynivka sector, Russian forces launched 14 assaults on Ukrainian defensive positions near Kostiantynivka, Pleshchiyivka, Sofiyivka, and Rusyn Yar, as well as towards Illinivka and Novopavlivka.
In the Pokrovsk direction, 21 attacks were reported, with attempts to advance in the areas of Rodynske, Pokrovsk, Udačne, and Molodetske, as well as towards Novoleksandrivka and Novopidhorodne. The Hulyaipole sector also experienced 21 assaults, particularly around Hulyaipole and its neighboring settlements.
Airstrikes targeted various locations, including Vozdvizhivka, Verkhnya Tersa, and other areas within the conflict zone. Ongoing clashes were noted in the Southern Slobozhansky, Kupiansk, Lyman, Sloviansk, Oleksandrivka, and Orikhiv directions.
On March 2, the General Staff announced that Ukrainian forces had liberated nine settlements in the Oleksandrivka direction, with airborne units actively engaged in offensive operations. Since late January, these units have reportedly regained control over 400 square kilometers and eight settlements.
The Ukrainian military’s operations aim to push Russian forces beyond the Dnipropetrovsk region, disrupting their plans for further advances in both Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia. The Institute for the Study of War noted that Russian forces have struggled to capitalize on their previous gains in Pokrovsk, indicating that the complete capture of Donetsk Oblast is not an inevitable outcome.
Analysts highlighted that the costly and slow capture of Pokrovsk does not bode well for Russian advancements in other areas of Donetsk, as the city is significantly smaller than fortified locations like Kramatorsk and Sloviansk. This ongoing struggle contradicts Kremlin assertions of a swift and easy takeover of Ukraine’s defensive positions.
Intense fighting continues in Eastern Ukraine, with significant military engagements reported across multiple sectors. Ukrainian forces have made territorial gains, while Russian advances appear limited despite earlier claims of success.
