Increase in Ukrainian Male Refugees in Germany Amid Ongoing Conflict

As of March 9, 2026, Germany has seen a significant rise in the number of Ukrainian male refugees aged 18 to 63, with reports indicating a total of 1,340,362 individuals who entered the country due to the war in Ukraine. This figure includes 349,520 men and 500,393 women within the same age bracket.

In the previous year, the number of men in this age group was recorded at 297,660, marking an increase of approximately 52,000 over twelve months. Meanwhile, the number of women aged 18 to 63 also grew by nearly 24,000 during the same timeframe.

Analysis from the Federal Employment Agency for the broader age group of 15 to 64 years shows that the male proportion has risen to about 41%, up from 26% in May 2022. These statistics are politically sensitive, particularly as many Ukrainian citizens of conscription age have faced travel restrictions following the general mobilization.

Initially, the travel restrictions applied to men aged 18 to 60. However, in August, Kyiv eased these rules, allowing young men under 22 to leave the country. The Federal Ministry of the Interior noted that this option has been actively utilized since the autumn. Recent data from the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) indicates that in February, German states registered 8,783 Ukrainian asylum seekers in the central registration system, including 4,392 male refugees, some of whom are minors.

“Forecasts indicate that hundreds of thousands of soldiers have died on both sides. I understand anyone who escapes this slaughter,” stated Clara Bünger, an expert in domestic policy from the Left Party.

Conversely, criticism has emerged from the ruling CDU/CSU party, with spokesperson Alexander Trom asserting, “Young conscription-age men from Ukraine have no place in the German social security system.” He highlighted that other European nations, such as Poland, have already adjusted their benefits accordingly and called for a fair distribution of Ukrainian refugees across Europe.

Additionally, the Norwegian government has expressed intentions to tighten residency rules for newly arrived conscription-age men from Ukraine. Meanwhile, the EU clarified that the decision to grant temporary protection to Ukrainians applies uniformly to all individuals, without exceptions for conscription-age men.

Recent data reveals a notable increase in Ukrainian male refugees in Germany, with significant implications for social support systems and political discourse. The ongoing conflict continues to drive these trends, prompting discussions on refugee distribution across Europe.
