Russian propagandists were interviewed with Taranenko. He, in particular, assured that he was “not going to return to Ukraine” and accused the Armed Forces of shelling of Donetsk region. After February 2021, Anatoly disappeared from the information space.

Four years later, in May 2025, Taranenko reappeared in Ukraine-as a soldier released from captivity.

However, as Hromadske found out, in December 2024, the Chechelivsky District Court of the Dnieper resumed the materials of criminal proceedings against Taranenko in the Volnovakha District Court. On June 4, 2025, the court has already been appointed in this case to listen to the merits.

Anatoly Taranenko is accused of desertion (Part 3 of Article 408 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine) and the appropriation of military property (Part 3 of Article 410 of the Criminal Code). For this he faces up to 12 years in prison.

At the same time, on June 5, the Chechelovsky District Court refused to send Taranenko into custody, since the accused was not present at the meeting. Prosecutor Irina Lenkevich indicated that after the exchange, the accused was undergoing rehabilitation at the Vinnytsia Military Hospital.

Prehistory:

  • In May, a large exchange of “1000 to 1000” took place, which resulted in Anatoliy Taranenko.
  • The Coordination Headquarters on the management of prisoners of war explained that Ukraine could not influence the lists of those returned by Russia. The aggressor state handed over to those who were ready to pass, Ukraine as well.
