“Despite the extraordinary efforts of millions of Americans, wrote and sent petitions to Congress, demanding to preserve the CPB federal funding, we are forced to face difficult reality – the termination of our activity,” the Presidential and CEO of Patricia Corporation reads.

The closure was the result of the decision of the Republican House of Republicans, initiated by President Trump: to cancel CPB financing worth $ 1.1 billion over two years as part of the total reduction in public media funding and foreign aid programs by $ 9 billion.

Over the 57 years of its existence, the corporation has distributed more than $ 500 million annually between PBS, NPR, and more than 1,500 local public mediastania. Despite federal support, the stations are mostly entrusted with spectators, sponsorship support from private companies and funding by local authorities.

Trump and his allies consistently advocated the cessation of CPB funding, while accusing PBS and NPR of liberal bias that the organizations have repeatedly denied.

According to the CPB, 245 of the 544 grants operated in rural areas. In many cases, these stations are the only sources of news, educational programs and children’s content in such regions. Without state support, many of them can stop work. In addition, these stations provide employment for almost 6 thousand people.

“Public media was one of the most reliable institutions in American life, providing educational opportunities, warnings about emergencies, civilized discussions and cultural communication in every corner of the country,” Harrison said.

In a statement, the President and CEO of NPR Catherine Mayer characterized the CPB as “a vital source of funding for local stations, a defender of educational and cultural programs and resistance to independent journalism.”

“A wave of consequences of this closure will reach every public media organization and, most importantly, every community across the country that rests with public broadcasting,” said Mayor.
