At the same time, snowfall and stormy winds caused chaos in passenger transportation by rail. More than two dozen routes were stopped on Sunday alone, twice as many were canceled on Monday. According to the FlightAware website, more than 1,400 flights were canceled and another 740 delayed across the country on Monday morning.
Forecasters are warning that cold temperatures will persist across much of the United States for weeks to come.
