In the Russian Federation against the oppositionist Elijah Ponomarev, they initiated the case of violent seizure of power

Against the former deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation, Ilya Ponomarev, a criminal case about the violent seizure of power and the organization of a terrorist community, reports the Russian State Agency of TASS with reference to the FSB.

The department named the data on the foundation of Ponomaryov in Poland “The Congress of People’s Deputies” and his “interaction with one of the Ukrainian paramilitary units” recognized in Russia by a terrorist organization.

The new criminal case has also been initiated against “other persons” whose names are not specified. Promotional Russian media reports that the searches of Ponomarev’s “associates” are taking place in nine regions of Russia.

In September 2024, the court in Moscow condemned Ponomarev in absentia, which lives in Ukraine, up to 10 years in prison in the case of dissemination of false information about the Russian army and justification of terrorism. In 2022, the excellence was wanted in the case of fakes.

Ilya Ponomarev is a former MP State Duma. On March 20, 2014, he was the only vote against the Russian occupation of Crimea, and left Russia that year. After the start of the war in Ukraine, Ponomaryov created the organization “Congress of People’s Deputies” abroad. The politician also supports the Legion of Freedom of Russia and calls for the overthrow of power in Russia through military occupation. In Russia, Ponomarev is on the list of terrorists and extremists.
