Dozens of people in Spain were stuck on trucks, on the roofs of shops and gas stations, or locked in their cars until they were rescued.

Thhe Guardian adds that several people are missing. Rescue operations in the country continue in the south and east, but rescuers are hampered by broken power lines, as well as destroyed telephone networks, and it is difficult to move on roads that remain impassable.

The newspaper El Pais noted that the heavy rains led to power outages for approximately 155,000 people and blocked roads in several provinces. Also, high-speed rail traffic between Madrid and the Valencian Community, as well as the Mediterranean corridor to Barcelona, was suspended during the day.

It was previously reported that the intense rain in Spain belongs to a phenomenon known as gota fría, or cold drop. Such rains occur when cold air moves over the warm waters of the Mediterranean Sea and leads to the formation of cumulus clouds.

Scientists suggest that extreme weather events are becoming more intense due to climate change.
