The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket lifted the Intuit Machines AThena and Nasa Lunar Trailblazer orbital ship into the sky.
Falcon 9 started on the night against February 27. After about 8.5 minutes, the first-degree rocket launcher returned to the ground for landing on SpaceX A shorthol of Gravitas, as planned. It was the ninth launch and planting of this particular Falcon 9 rocket.
Athena, created by Intuitive Machines based in Houston, contains 10 NASA scientific tools, many of which are designed to find traces of water ice. Lunar Trailblazer will do a similar job but from a height. AThena mission is called IM-2 because it is the second launch per month for intuitive machines. IM-2 is part of NASA Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS), which is looking for commercial partnerships for the delivery of scientific and technical equipment to the month.
The ambition mission of Ahena is focused on a large amount of water ice and other resources near the South Pole of the month, as well as in the future of future missions to use these resources for sustainable residence in space. To fulfill all IM-2 goals, the landing module carries two additional devices: Mini-River called mapp (Mobile Autonomous Prospecting Platform), which was built by Lunar Outpost of Colorado, and Grace, Robot Hhoper Intuitive Machines, which will explore the region around the landing site using a series of jumps.
Ahena goes to the region of Mons Muton on the moon, where, according to scientists, there is a sufficient amount of water ice deposits. If everything goes according to the plan, the planting module will reach the monthly orbit in 4–5 days, touches the surface 1.5–3 days after that and will work on a month about 10 earth days.
IM-2 follows the historical first mission of the IM-1 IM-1 Odisseus planting module. He managed to enter the surface, making the first in history a soft landing on a month on a private spacecraft. But the probe broke one of his planting legs, causing it to spill over. As a result, an antenna of a spacecraft with a high gain was blocked, which prevented the transmission of some data that NASA hoped to collect.
