The man was detained on August 12, 2017 and sent in custody. On May 10, 2018, Limmeshka was sentenced to eight years in a general regime colony on charges of illegally purchase and storage of weapons and explosives, as well as the manufacture of an explosive device (there were three episodes in total).
Gennady Limeshko was to be released on February 21, 2025, but this did not happen – from a colony in the Kursk district of Stavropol region he was sent to the Center for Temporary Detention of Foreigners in the Rostov region of Russia, where he was located until March 13. Since then, his place of residence remains unknown.
According to the Memorial Human Rights Center, in August 2023, information appeared that a new accusation had been made against Limeko. The details of human rights activists are unknown. His wife said that the case could be initiated under the article on extremism. In July 2025, the man was included in the list of “terrorists and extremists”, which may mean a criminal case under a terrorist or extremist article.
After the detention of Limimeshko, the FSB stated that he is an agent of the Security Service of Ukraine. The man allegedly served in the Armed Forces as a senior intelligence reconnaissance, and came to the occupied Crimea to damage the power lines, to cause rock rocks for overlapping of the track, as well as to set fire to the forest in the Sudak area – Rybach – Alushta and the landfill. He was detained during an attempt to damage the transmission lines.
The Security Service of Ukraine then stated that the detention of Gennady Limmeshko is a provocation, and he is not an agent of the Ukrainian special service.
