On Monday, September 16, a passenger waiting for the bus found the body of a newborn child in a garbage can at the bus stop.
According to the district prosecutor’s office of Minsk-Mazowiec, a young Ukrainian woman gave birth to a child in a workers’ hostel between a room and a bathroom. An autopsy revealed that the child was born alive at the 37th week of pregnancy. After giving birth, the mother had a hemorrhage. On the way to the hospital, she wrapped the child in a plastic bag and threw it in the trash.
In addition to the child’s mother, the police detained three more people: the 18-year-old girl’s sister, her boyfriend, and the girls’ cousin. All detainees are under 20 years of age. They obstructed the investigation, namely, they washed away traces of blood, cleaned the mattress and denied information about the birth. The law enforcement officers forbade them to leave the country.
The woman claims that she did not know about the pregnancy. Forensic experts have not yet determined what exactly caused the newborn’s death. Currently, asphyxia, bleeding or a cold are not excluded.
Currently, the Ukrainians have brought charges of infanticide, but after a psychiatric examination, the qualification of the act may change.
