What to do in case of power outage? Having experienced the many blackouts currently happening across the country, we’ve put together the best tips on what to do before, during and after a power outage to make it as comfortable as possible.

How to turn on the light during a power outage

  • It is best to use flashlights or battery-powered lights (LED) to be used in the event of a power outage instead of candles to prevent accidental ignition. Attach a strip of glow-in-the-dark tape to the lights to make them easy to find.
  • Headlamps are very useful. This frees up both hands for tasks, and family members can be more independent. You can even read a book in bed while wearing a headlamp. Also stock up on straps to tie your headlamp to your water bottle.
  • Do not use candles or open flames as a light source, as this may cause a fire, especially if there are children or pets in the house. When creating a romance, they can turn over too easily. However, if this is all you have on hand, be careful not to leave candles or fuel lamps unattended. Use reliable candlesticks. Empty cans half filled with sand work great. Don’t forget to stock up on lighters or matches to light the candles.
  • Your mobile phone can be used for lighting as long as the battery lasts. Greatly extend battery life by connecting your phone to a USB portable power bank.

How not to freeze when the electricity is turned off

  • Choose one room where people and pets can spend most of their time together. Choose a room with few or no windows on the south side for maximum warmth during the day and wear warm clothing.
  • Cover all windows with curtains or quilts. Open south-facing windows during the day to let in the sun’s heat.
  • Never use coal for heating or cooking indoors. Never use an oven as a heat source.
  • What to cook and eat without electricity

  • Open the refrigerator or freezer door only when necessary. Plan ahead to minimize the time the door is open.
  • If the door remains closed, the refrigerator without electricity will keep food safe for four hours. A full freezer will maintain temperature for 48 hours (or 24 hours if it is half full).
  • Keep food outside if the temperature is cold enough (5 degrees or less). Monitor the temperature with a thermometer.
  • Keep ice packs in the freezer for use in coolers or in the refrigerator in case of a power outage.
  • Eat foods that you know won’t spoil. Good examples are canned foods such as vegetables, beans, and soups.
  • If you have a wood stove, you can cook on it. Heat canned soup on it and boil water for tea and instant coffee.
  • Arrange dinners with neighbors and take turns hosting guests. You will eat better and at the same time get to know your neighbors.
  • If the weather permits, cook on an outdoor grill, but only outdoors. Due to the potential for smoke and ignition, never use an open grill indoors.
  • What to do after a power outage

  • If in doubt about a food, throw it away. Also throw away any perishable food that has been above 10°C for more than two hours. If you are not sure that the food is still good, it is better to dispose of it as well, so as not to get poisoned.
  • Make sure you extinguish all candles and kerosene lamps you were using during the power outage. They can be a fire hazard if left unattended.
