A strong earthquake occurred in Mexico on Friday, January 2, because of which the country’s president had to interrupt her briefing.

Details: The earthquake was reported to have a magnitude of 6.5 and was centered near the city of San Marcos in the southern state of Guerrero near the Pacific coast resort of Acapulco, Mexico’s National Seismological Agency said.

In addition, seismic alarm signals interrupted the first press briefing of President Claudia Scheinbaum in the new year, the agency writes.

The state civil defense agency reported various landslides around Acapulco and on other highways in the state.

Residents and tourists in Mexico City and Acapulco took to the streets immediately after the first tremors.

Guerrero state governor Evelyn Salgado said a 50-year-old woman who lived in a small town near the epicenter died when her house collapsed. In addition, the hospital in Chilpancingo suffered significant damage, and its patients were evacuated.
