Russian ballistic attack on Kyiv on January 18 – what is known

Around 5:50 a.m. on January 18, powerful explosions rang out in Kyiv — almost simultaneously with the announcement of an air alert. The Russians attacked the capital with ballistic missiles. Three people died as a result of the impact.

The Air Force of the Ukrainian Armed Forces reported that Russia attacked Ukraine with four Iskander-M/KN-23 missiles, and two missiles were shot down by air defense in the Kyiv region. Debris fell in the Shevchenkiv district of the capital, causing serious destruction.

The main water pipeline was damaged, the Lukyanivska metro station was temporarily closed, McDonald’s restaurant, shopping center, shops and 10 cars were damaged.

According to Yuriy Ignat, the head of the communication department of the Air Force Command, two ballistic missiles were flying towards Kyiv, the anti-aircraft defense shot down both, but the falling debris led to destruction due to the fact that one was shot down at a low altitude. Also, the warhead of the missile could detonate already after being shot down.
