According to police, all the attacks took place between 20:00 and 20:30 and the pilots were able to land safely without injury. However, as the press secretary of the police department of the German city of Trier, Kerstin Klein, warned, such laser attacks can cause serious visual impairment or eye injuries to the pilots.
“These planes move at a great speed. That’s why we can consider ourselves lucky that nothing worse has happened yet,” she emphasized.
Police said that laser pointers, which are freely available in stores, can be used in such attacks, although in this case it is not yet known what equipment was used.
According to the police, there is already one lead in this incident. According to Klein, the laser beams were coming from the same direction.
She therefore assumed that the criminal or criminals were operating from a certain location near Spangdahlem.
Klein emphasized: German law provides for severe penalties for “dangerous interference with air traffic.”
Prehistory:
- On July 8, Germany summoned the Chinese ambassador over the Chinese military’s use of a laser against its aircraft involved in the EU’s ASPIDES operation.
- The German media wrote that the use of a laser by the Chinese military against a German aircraft involved in the EU mission occurred during its approach to a Chinese frigate.
- China, in turn, denied these accusations.
