The Bundestag and Bundesrat have decided to tighten gun laws, partly in response to the terrorist attack in Solingen. The knife ban came into effect on October 31 and extends for the first time to the current Christmas market season. Visitors are prohibited from carrying knives of any kind regardless of whether they are weapons within the meaning of the Arms Act.
Exceptions apply to certain groups, such as tradespeople, emergency workers and firefighters, and fairgoers. Knives are also allowed to be transported, but they must be “inaccessible”, for example, in a package.
