The controller found a passenger without a ticket and told him to get out. The man began to beat the controller and caused him serious head injuries.
Passengers who witnessed the events gave the controller first aid and informed the police. He underwent cardiopulmonary resuscitation and was taken to the hospital alive, but he died on Wednesday morning. The man raised two children by himself.
The 26-year-old attacker turned out to be a Greek citizen living in Luxembourg. Before that, he had no problems with the law in Germany. The man was taken into custody.
Transport Minister Patrick Schneider expressed his condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased.
“We must do more to protect our workers. Trains and stations must be a safe place,” he stressed.
It also emerged that an incident with less tragic consequences occurred the next day in Hamburg, after a man entered the station’s staff room and was asked to leave. He injured a railway employee.
