Finland conducted a unique study. As a result, the oldest juniper bush was found, whose age is 1647.

Scientists used the analysis of annual rings to determine that the plant began to grow in 260 AD and ended the life cycle in 1906. This discovery has become an important milestone in the study of Europe’s tree plants and gave scientists new opportunities to study the climatic changes that have taken place over the centuries.

The study was conducted by a group of scientists who focused on ancient juniper in the Arctic and subarctic regions. Thanks to these data, it became possible not only to establish the age of plants, but also to trace the climatic changes recorded in their rings. During the expedition to Lapland, experts found several other specimens of juniper whose age exceeds a thousand years, which confirms the exceptional durability of this plant.

The study of annual rings of woody plants enables researchers to track climate change, the influence of extreme weather conditions and other events that have left a trace in the history of Earth. Juniper proved to be particularly useful for such research, since it grows in a variety of conditions, from harsh Arctic regions to arid deserts.

This discovery emphasizes the importance of long -lived plants to study the history of ecosystems and climate. In addition, the results of the study can be used in archeology, helping accurately dating findings containing wood material. The work of Finnish and international experts in this area will continue, and new findings can give an even deeper understanding of the natural processes that took place thousands of years ago.
