For a long time, black cats were believed to bring bad luck or to be associated with the occult. So these animals became one of the symbols of the Halloween holiday, which is celebrated every year on October 31.
Terrace local authorities have decided to reject any requests for adoption of black cats between October 1 and November 10 to prevent “the possible risk […]arising from superstitions, rituals or irresponsible attitudes”.
In Terrace, they say that the city has not recorded any cases of cruelty to black cats. At the same time, such incidents have occurred in other districts, so the decision was made after warnings from animal protection groups.
Animal rights activists warn that animals can be injured, killed or used as props during Halloween rituals.
The mayor’s office says that requests to adopt black-colored animals usually increase on this holiday.
“We try to prevent adoptions by people because of fashion or impulse and to prevent any horrible practices that we know exist.”– Deputy Mayor Noel Duque told the RTVE television company.
Adoption restrictions will have exceptions at the discretion of local center staff.
The city authorities emphasized that the measure is “temporary and exceptional” and aims to create an additional precaution for the safety of animals. They do not rule out that the ban may be repeated in the future.
According to the Catalan News Agency, more than 9,800 cats live in the city. Another hundred animals are kept in the adoption center – among them 12 are black in color.
