Damage from the explosion of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant (hydroelectric power plants) amount to about $14 billion.
This was announced by the Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine Svitlana Grynchuk, as reported by the Ministry of Environment.
“If we talk about the material side of this damage, almost $14 billion in damages caused by the destruction of the Kakhovskaya Dam and the loss of these water resources have been calculated,” she said in an interview with the Rada TV channel.

Grynchuk noted that the volume of lost water resources can be compared with half of the reserves of some African countries. And for Ukraine, it was also felt, and therefore the problem of water supply in the affected regions is still very relevant.
The minister said that the government is currently working on finding new sources of water resources and is engaged in the construction of new channels to supply the population with high-quality drinking water. In addition, foreign partners are involved.
According to the minister, about 30% of the nature conservation fund of the Kherson region was flooded and lost. However, she noted that now a special ecosystem has formed on this territory and nature is gradually recovering.
“Of course, we had expectations that this land, which remained after the water receded, would degrade, but, fortunately, nature here took Ukraine’s side. Now we have willow forests growing in these territories. It develops, of course, in a different way, but a certain such a special ecosystem was created as a result of this tragedy. Nature really restores itself little by little,” Grynchuk said.
However, the minister noted that Ukraine will feel the consequences of this disaster for a long time.
It was previously reported that on June 6, 2023, the Russian army blew up the Kakhovskaya HPP dam. As a result of the explosion, settlements on both banks of the Dnieper were flooded. According to official data, 32 people died, but it is not known how many people died on the occupied left bank of the Kherson region.
According to the Ministry of Natural Resources, total damages from the explosion of the Kakhovskaya HPP exceed UAH 146 billion. According to the assessment of Ukrhydroenergo, after the deoccupation of the territory where the Kakhovka hydroelectric station is located, the facility can be rebuilt in 6-7 years.

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, called the Russian terrorist attack on the Kakhovskaya HPP the biggest man-made environmental disaster in Europe in decades.
The Prosecutor General’s Office started a pre-trial investigation into the facts of ecocide and violations of the laws and customs of war, and also sent an appeal to the International Criminal Court, providing “all primary information”.
As a result of Russian detonation of the Kakhovsky Reservoir, the desertification (aridization) trends of southern Ukraine may intensify. This area will become a desert, analysts assumed.
In October 2024, Ukrhydroenergo decided not to sue Russia for the destruction of the Kakhovskaya HPP.
