Details: It is known that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban kept in EU tension, threatening to block the continuation of sanctions against Russia, including freezing of its financial assets.
One of the EU diplomats stated that Hungary was “playing with fire” and “lays a bomb in transatlantic relations.”
At the same time, two European diplomats said that it was possible to reach an agreement with Budapest.
Hungary is expected to retreat in exchange for a statement concerning its concern about “energy security”.
The approval of the continuation of sanctions is planned to be officially issued during a meeting of foreign ministers, which will begin in Brussels at 10am local time.
Bloomberg sources have also said that Hungary is ready to remove its disagreement with the continuation of sanctions.
According to one of the interlocutors, the EU will provide several assurances in a statement concerning energy security. In particular, it will confirm the obligation to help Ukraine restore and stabilize its infrastructure, as well as resolve the issue of gas and oil supply.
The publication writes that in parallel the EU is already working on the next package of sanctions, but officials are already preparing for resistance from Budapest. The EU hopes to adopt these measures next month.
Prehistory:
- Kai Callas, the head of European diplomacy, has previously stated that the EU Member States would agree to continue sanctions against Russia.
