The ceremony was attended by rabbis, the ambassador of Argentina, charge d’affaires of the embassies of Canada and Bulgaria in Ukraine, representatives of the diplomatic missions of Great Britain and France, Kyiv mayor Vitaly Klitschko.
“I took part in the public ceremony of lighting the first candle on Hanukkah, traditionally installed on Independence Square, near the Central Post Office. It was established by the Federation of Jewish Communities of Ukraine with the assistance of the city authorities. The Hanukkah Menorah in Kyiv is the largest in Europe. This year it was created by a Ukrainian designer,” Klitschko wrote in a telegram.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy congratulated the Jewish communities of Ukraine and all Jews on Hanukkah.
“On these days, Hanukkah candles are lit to mark the beginning of the holiday, which has a particularly strong meaning during the war. A light that does not go out even in the dark. A faith that helps to persevere. The unity of people who support each other when it is most difficult. May the Hanukkah lights bring warmth and peace to every Jewish family’s home, add strength and faith, a sense of support and peace,” he wrote in a telegram.
Prime Minister Yuliya Svyridenko took part in the candle-lighting ceremony on the occasion of the Jewish holiday Hanukkah at the Government House of Ukraine.
