GUR: Russia expands military presence in Armenia against the background of tension with Azerbaijan

Russia increases the military presence in Armenia, as well as accelerates the acquisition of its military base in Guumra in the Armenian territory against the backdrop of tension with Azerbaijan, according to the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense.

The department emphasized that the main goal is to increase military-political pressure on the countries of the South Caucasus.

According to intelligence, personnel for the base are recruited among the military from the Rostov and Volgograd regions of the Russian Federation, as well as from temporarily occupied Crimea. In addition, Moscow “actively” is looking for volunteers among the representatives of the peoples of the Caucasus, in particular in North Ossetia and Adygei, they emphasized in GUR.

“The deployment of Russian troops in Armenia is an element of the Kremlin’s complex strategy aimed at destabilizing the global security situation. Together with the ignition of the interethnic conflict, Moscow increases the military presence in the Caucasus. Probably, the deterioration of relations between Azerbaijan and the Russian Federation was prepared in advance, ” – said the representative of GUR Andriy Yusov.
