The article was accompanied by a map on which some of the territories of Greece, including the historical regions of Corfu, Epir and Greven were marked as “historical Albanian territories”. In the material, the Berlin Congress of 1878 is called “historical injustice” regarding the Albanians.

The Greek side emphasized that at that time Albania did not exist as an independent state, and the Epir and Greeven were under the control of the Ottoman Empire and were inhabited mainly by the Greek population.
According to the spokesman of the Greek Government Pavlos Marinakis, the position of Athena is that the map, on which part of Greece are marked as the territory of “historical Albania”, is non -historical, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs transferred to Albania a note of the protest.
“Greece emphasizes in all directions that in a period when efforts are made to strengthen relations between the two countries, such publications can only have a negative impact,” Marinakis added.
This is not the first case of a tense relationship between Greece and Albania.
A few years ago, Albania and Greece began to cooperate with a number of bilateral issues, but everything changed when Freddie Beller, an ethnic Greek, elected mayor of Khamara in Albania, was arrested in May 2023 and convicted of bribery of voters in July 2024.
In 1940, Greece adopted a law declaring a state of war between the two states after the Italian occupation troops in Albania attacked Greece. The Greek Parliament has not yet canceled it, despite the fact that two countries signed a friendship agreement in the early 1990s.
