Greece prepares the transfer of artillery and cassette ammunition to Ukraine through the Czech Republic

Vlad Cherevko I have been interested in all kinds of electronics and technologies since the early 2000s. I like to play computer games and understand the work of different gadgets. I regularly monitor the news of the technology in the world and write materials about it.

The Greek government plans to transfer a considerable amount of military equipment and ammunition to Ukraine that are recognized as outdated to their own armed forces. This was reported by the Greek edition of Ef.Syn.

It is 60 self -propelled howitzers M110A2 caliber 203 mm, about 150 thousand shells to them and a thousand rockets of 70 mm caliber and 127 mm of ZUNI. The transfer will take place through the Czech Republic on the basis of an interstate agreement.

According to the decision of the Council of Chiefs of General Staffs of the country, the aforementioned weapons were classified as “unoperatively necessary” because it does not meet the modern requirements of the Armed Forces of Greece.

Military property comes from the reserves of the Greek army and the Air Force and will be transferred in the state “as is.” The government expects to receive about 199.4 million euros from the agreement, which is planned to be directed for new weapons.

In the list of weapons transferred:

  • 60 howitzers M110A2 (31.2 million euros);
  • 50 thousand M106 shells (41.5 million euros);
  • 40 thousand M650 hera shells (60 million euros);
  • 30 thousand cassette ammunition M404 ICM (33 million euros);
  • 30 thousand cassette ammunition M509A1 DPICM (33.6 million euros).

Each M509A1 projectile contains 180 subbovs against armored vehicles and live strength. Although the International Convention on Casket Ammunition prohibits their use, Greece is not its participant.

The final decision on the transfer should be made by the Government Council of National Security under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister.

For reference, M110A2 is an American 203 mm self-propelled howitzer, which is a modernized version of the M110 base model, adopted in the 1960s. Modification A2 has received a longer barrel, which significantly increased its roundabout: it is able to fire with conventional shells up to 24 km, and active-reactive shells (Hera)-up to 29-30 km. The main advantage of this SAU lies in the extremely high capacity of its 203 mm ammunition (the weight of the projectile up to 90.7 kg), which provides significant destruction, although its speed (up to 1 shot per minute) is relatively low.

By the way, it has recently become known that some NATO countries are pressing on Greece so that it transfers its Mirage fighters 2000-5 to Ukraine.
