Google: One request in Gemini consumes energy as a second of work microwave

Google has published a detailed account of its GEMini apps, first revealing the exact indicators for one text request, MIT Technology Review reports.

According to the company, the average text request in GEMINI consumes 0.24 W · h of electricity – about the same amount as a microwave oven in one second of work. It also causes emissions of 0.03 g of CO₂ and uses 0.26 milliliters of water – about five drops.

This report was the first such a transparent example from a large technological company with a popular shi product. Earlier, independent researchers could not directly estimate energy costs due to lack of access to internal data.

According to Google Dina’s chief scientist, the report takes into account not only the work of specialized TPU processors, but also other infrastructure: 25% of energy consume CPU and host machine memory, 10%-reserve systems, and another 8%-cooling and other expenses of the date center.

Google notes that during the year, Gemini efficiency increased significantly: in May 2024, the average request consumed 33 times more energy than in May 2025. This is explained by improving models and software optimizations.

However, more sophisticated tasks, such as the processing of dozens of books or using Reasoning Models, consume much more resources. And the report so far applies only to text queries, without taking into account images or videos that require much more energy.

Google has calculated the emissions of CO₂ taking into account its transactions on the purchase of “clean” electricity from renewable sources. Since 2010, the company has concluded contracts for more than 22 GW of solar, wind, geothermal and nuclear projects, which reduced the average emissions to approximately a third of the standard of conventional power grid.

Experts call this report “The most comprehensive analysis” of the energy consumption of the AI today. However, there is still a lack of transparency about the total number of Gemini requests, which does not allow to evaluate the full environmental impact of the service.

Nevertheless, Google tries to reassure users. “Energy to perform one request in Gemini is equivalent to a few seconds of TV viewing or five drops of water,” Jeff Dean stressed.
