Giro and the harsh realities of Ukrainian cycling

On May 8, the first Grand Tour of Professional Cycling-Super Many Diral D’italy-2025. In the applications, 23 teams are no Ukrainian.

It remains only to nostalt in a time when Ukrainians to Jiro could make a full team. For example, just over 20 years ago, 9 (!) Ukrainians took part in Dzhiro-2004. And they acted powerfully enough. Sergiy Gonchar took 2nd place in the General Classification, Yaroslav Popovich came to the finish line in the fifth (but during the race even he had time to try on the pink T -shirt of the leader of the general standings).

The rest of the results were more modest, but in the team work their help would be significant-Kirill Pospeyev finished 41st, Vladimir Bileva-49th, the man of the President of the Federation of Athletics of Ukraine and the current People’s Deputy Olga Saladutha Denis Kostyuk-59-M, Vladimir-64-Mr. -102, Maxim Rudenko-132.

The year before, at Giro-2003, Popovich took 3rd place, and Gonchar had 5 victories at the stages in different years. At that time, 10-15 Ukrainians performed professional Italian bicycle components.

Over the years, the results in the Ukrainian Bicycle Profir have become worse. This trend can be traced to our representation to Giro. In 2013, only experienced Popovich came to the start of the Super Many Days, and the next Ukrainian competed in the Italian Grand Tour only after 7 years (Mark Padun took 70th place).

The last Ukrainian in Jiro’s application was Andriy Ponomar, who took 117th place in the Italian super-many years three years ago. The depth of the fall of Ukrainian cycling is now even difficult to imagine.
