Germany plans defense purchases worth €377 billion – media

Germany intends to carry out defense purchases worth 377 billion euros in the land, air, sea, space and cyber spheres. Source: new internal German government documents seen by Politico, “European Truth” writes. Details: The document is an overview of arms procurement plans that will be detailed in Germany’s 2026 defense budget, but many of them relate to long-term acquisitions without clearly defined deadlines. Taken together, this is a comprehensive “roadmap” for the long-overdue reform of the German defense sector, firmly based on the support of domestic industry. German companies dominate among the identified tenders: about 160 projects with a total value of 182 billion euros are related to domestic contractors. Rheinmetall is the undisputed leader, with the Düsseldorf-based group and its subsidiaries appearing in 53 separate points of the plan worth more than 88 billion euros. About 32 billion euros are to go directly to Rheinmetall, and another 56 billion to its subsidiaries and joint ventures. The document envisages, in particular, the supply of 687 Puma combat vehicles, of which 662 are in the combat version and 25 are in the training version, by 2035. In the area of air defense, the Bundeswehr plans to purchase 561 Skyranger 30 systems. Diehl Defense remains the second main industrial partner, and the IRIS-T missile system is a key element of Germany’s modernized air defense system. Drones also figure prominently in the country’s military plans. And one of the most politically colored plans on the Bundeswehr’s wish list is the potential replenishment of the fleet with 15 F-35 aircraft from Lockheed Martin at a cost of about 2.5 billion euros. Also, the Bundeswehr plans to purchase 400 Tomahawk Block Vb cruise missiles for approximately 1.15 billion euros, as well as three Lockheed Martin Typhon launchers worth 220 million euros – this combination will provide Germany with a strike range of 2,000 kilometers. It is worth noting that in the spring the coalition in Germany agreed to a multi-billion package for defense and infrastructure due to increased borrowing. In past years, the Bundeswehr suffered from a shortage of equipment in all branches of the military and a shortage of ammunition worth tens of billions of euros.
